How Does A Wireless Mouse Work?

A computer mouse in most cases uses a cord to connect to the computer and to obtain their power from the power supply. However, increasingly more people are using the wireless mouse because it allows them to have cordless accessibility to their computers. A wireless mouse comes with a receiver station that uses a PS/2 or USB connection to plug into the user’s computer. The mouse then works by sending signals to this receiver. Since it is not physically connected to the computer, the mouse has no power supply and therefore relies on alkaline batteries for its power or it can be recharged.

There are two kinds of wireless mice; the RF and the Bluetooth RF. The RF (Radio Frequency) mice require a radio transmitter and a radio receiver. They work by transmitting radio waves on radio frequencies. The RF mouse has a transmitter integrated within it that it uses to send signals in form of radio signals to the receiver. The signals sent correspond to the movements and buttons that are clicked on the mouse. The RF receiver, which is connected to the peripheral mouse input of the computer, receives the RF signals from the mouse. It then decodes the signals and sends them to the computer in the same way as a mouse with a chord. The majority of receivers connect to the computer’s peripheral mouse input while others come as a separate card that is installed into a computer’s expansion slots. There are also receivers that come in a separate unit with a cable to connect it to the computers’ peripheral mouse input.

The Bluetooth RF mouse works by transmitting signals through Bluetooth RF. These mice are more advanced because they automatically choose a radio frequency that has the least amount of traffic and they have a larger range. They choose the frequencies that have the least amount of traffic using software named adaptive frequency hopping. For this reason, they are quickly gaining popularity. Mice can also be classified according to the technology they use. There are mechanical mice that use a rubber ball, optical mice that use optical light, and laser mice that use laser light to calculate movement and position.

The RF wireless mouse has several advantages that include stability and reliability. In addition, the RF transmitter in the mouse requires low power thus enabling them to be powered using small alkaline batteries or they can be recharged. The mice are also lightweight and fairly cheap to obtain.
